Turbyfill adds management strength as company continues to expand its services

CUPERTINO, Calif., August 21, 2001 - Counterpane Internet Security, Inc., developer and leading provider of Managed Security Monitoring (MSM), today announced the promotion of Dr. Carolyn Turbyfill to Vice President of Engineering for the company. Turbyfill has held the position of Director, Software Development for the company since 1999.

In Dr. Turbyfill's new role, she will lead the development of new security tools and services, as well as provide architectural strategy for future offerings. Turbyfill will manage all aspects of engineering development.

Turbyfill spent eight years at Sun Microsystems architecting several mainstream product lines: Sun's SPARCstorarge Array, SPARCserver 10000, and nomadic computing solutions for radios and antenna's used for a wireless LANs. Her last position at Sun was Director of Engineering for the Internet Commerce Group. Turbyfill's background also includes five startup company senior management positions including VP Engineering of Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) (acquired by Network Associates), VP of Engineering and Operations for @LANTES.COM-a wireless internet appliance and online service company, and First Virtual Holdings Inc. (now Messagemedia) where she spearheaded the definition and development of the Interactive Messaging Platform.

Turbyfill's international experience ranges from remote management of engineering teams in Zelenograd, Russia; Grenoble, France and Bangalore, India; and two years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Waegwan, Kyongsangbuk-do, South Korea. She also studied Taiko Drums in Nakajo, Niigata-Ken, Japan.

Dr. Turbyfill has authored numerous publications. While attending the University of Wisconsin, Madison, she designed the Wisconsin Benchmark ("A Retrospective on the Wisconsin Benchmark" with D. Bitton, READINGS IN DATABASE SYSTEMS, edited by M. Stonebraker, Morgan Kaufmann Publishers, Inc., 1988) which became a de facto industry standard. At Cornell, she developed the AS3AP Benchmark ("AS3AP: An ANSI SQL Standard Scalable and Portable Benchmark for Relational Database Systems" with C. Orji and D. Bitton, THE BENCHMARK HANDBOOK FOR DATABASE AND TRANSACTION PROCESSING SYSTEMS, Morgan Kaufmann Publishers, Inc., 1991), which provided an empirical means of comparing the performance of diverse database architectures. Her most recent publication is: "The Eight Pitfalls of Network Computing" which was presented online at the VirtualBanking2000 Conference (www.virtualbanking2000.com).

Turbyfill has a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Cornell University, an M.Sc. in Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and a B.A. in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
