COUNTERPANE INTERNET SECURITY AND JOHN WILEY & SONS ANNOUNCE BRUCE SCHNEIER AS WINNER OF CMP'S SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT MAGAZINE JOLT AWARD
Schneier's book--Secrets & Lies--selected as a work that has "jolted" the industry with its significance
Cupertino, CA, April 30, 2001 - Counterpane Internet Security, Inc., the leader in Managed Security Monitoring (MSM), and John Wiley & Sons, the world's leading global publisher of print and electronic products, today announced that author Bruce Schneier has been selected a winner of CMP's Software Development magazine's 11th Annual Jolt Productivity Awards. The award was given for his newest book, Secrets & Lies: Digital Security in a Networked World, published by John Wiley & Sons.
Co-sponsored by the Rochester, NY-based Jolt Cola, the Software Development Jolt Product Excellence and Productivity Awards are given to products that have "jolted" the industry with their significance and made the difficult task of creating corporate software faster, easier and more efficient. Jolt, "the most powerful cola," is the fabled soft drink used by software programmers to get them through complex development projects.
"Almost all of the important new development paradigms that surfaced in the past ten years-the Unified Modeling Language, open-source software, the Web, and Java-have been recognized with Jolt or Productivity Awards," said Technical Editor Roger Smith. "This year's winners-highlighting trends like lightweight methodologies, support for multiple operating system platforms, and innovative modeling solutions-continue that excellent tradition into a new decade."
The six categories of tools nominated and chosen by a team of Software Development writers, contributing editors and columnists are Languages and Development Environments, Design and Management Tools, Books and Computer-Based Training, Libraries, Frameworks and Components, Special/Other, and Utilities and Deployment Tools. One Jolt Award and two to three Productivity Awards are given for each category.
Schneier's productivity award in the Books and Computer-based Training category, recognizes the significance of information security and how business management needs to shift their thinking from threat avoidance to risk management. This has prompted a mental buzz that is changing the way most information security specialists and senior enterprise management are treating the topic.
"I'm honored to have been chosen by Software Development magazine for this award," said Bruce Schneier, Counterpane's Co-founder and CTO. "This book needed to be written. Time is overdue for enterprise executives to begin managing information risk in the same way they do other business risks today. The Internet gives us a new way of doing business, but it also poses new types of business risks. This book helps business leaders think through the issues and make better management decisions as a result."
"We are delighted at Mr. Schneier's recognition for his most recent book," says Bob Ipsen, Publisher, John Wiley & Sons. "He has been a prolific author in a number of technology and business management issues over the past years. We are proud to play a continuing role in helping Bruce get his ideas communicated to such a broad audience around the world."
