Counterpane prepares for next stage of growth in Managed Security Monitoring

CUPERTINO, Calif., August 9, 2001 - Counterpane Internet Security, Inc., developer and leading provider of Managed Security Monitoring (MSM), today announced the promotion of John Bruce to Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for the company. Bruce has held the position of Vice President of Business Development for the company since 1999.

In Mr. Bruce's new role, he will lead the company's total marketing and sales effort, including strategic planning, marketing operations, public relations, sales, professional services, and technical support. He will continue to lead the business development activities for new strategic partnerships, channel programs, and other alliances worldwide.

Mr. Bruce's background has equipped him well for these new job responsibilities. Before joining Counterpane in October 1999, Bruce was Vice President of Alliances, for Symantec Corporation in Cupertino, California, where he drove company strategy for alliances with major vendors such as IBM, Tivoli, IGS, and Intel. These alliances are considered by the industry as major contributors to Symantec's dramatic growth in sales to corporations. Previously, Bruce served as Symantec's Senior Director of Business Development and OEM Sales where his role included directing business development, defining OEM sales strategy, negotiating acquisition of IBM's antivirus business, constructing the Symantec/IBM alliance, and negotiating other key partnerships and major business migrations.

Before coming to the United States in 1996, Bruce served Symantec Limited in Holland as Marketing and Business Development Director for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Skilled at bridging both corporate and national differences, he integrated marketing efforts from all geographies, consolidated resources into a centralized model, and defined an identity that became the Symantec standard. Bruce joined Symantec (UK) Limited in 1992 as Channel Manager for Northern Europe. His prior positions in the UK's high tech industry include positions as Sales Director for two value added resellers, and as Director of Sales and Marketing for a leading value add distributor, Bytech Systems. Bruce holds an Honors Degree in Business Management and a Masters Diploma in Computer Science from Bradford University in Bradford, England.
