COUNTERPANE INTERNET SECURITY JOINS SOURCEFIRE™ CERTIFIED SNORT® INTEGRATOR PROGRAM

Sourcefire's VRT Certified Snort Rules Now Made Available to all Counterpane's Customers

Mountain View, Calif., August 24, 2005 - Counterpane Internet Security today announced that it has joined Sourcefire's new Certified Snort Integrator Program. With this program, Sourcefire, the creators of Snort and a world leader in intrusion prevention, allows third-party solution providers to deliver Sourcefire VRT Certified Snort Rule updates directly to their end users. By joining the Certified Snort Integrator Program Counterpane is increasing the value of its offerings, simplifying the way its products are updated and providing detection in advance of actual threats.

"Snort is one of the most popular Network IDS deployed across Counterpane's customer base," said Doug Howard, Vice President of Service Delivery for Counterpane. "Our customers demand best in class, technology agnostic solutions that can accommodate scalable budgets. As the basis for our own turnkey Managed IDS offering, Snort helps Counterpane deliver an enhanced vulnerability management solution that meets -- and surpasses -- our customers' needs. Over the years, Open Source solutions have gained trust of most of the fortune 500 companies and global enterprises. As is the case with Snort, these solutions provide more flexibility in customization than commercialized solutions."

Leveraging proprietary technology, Counterpane's Managed IDS service offers correlation between Snort alerts and vulnerability data captured by Nessus scans. This approach reduces the number of "false positives," saving time and money for Counterpane's customers. Additionally, this technology improves reporting capabilities that allow customers to pinpoint and resolve security issues within complex global networks.

Counterpane's participation in the Certified Snort Integrator Program further broadens the company's comprehensive Vulnerability Scanning (MVS) services. These MVS services are built on a core vulnerability-scanning engine provided by Tenable through The Nessus Project -- another open source program customized by Counterpane.

"The growing complexity of today's networks means global enterprises increasingly are finding it difficult to ensure the security of their networks on their own. As the world's leading protector of networked information, Counterpane offers customers the earliest possible warning of internal or external threats to their information security and availability, as well as the expert counsel required to successfully mitigate such threats," said Howard. "Our expanded partnership with Sourcefire allows Counterpane continue to raise the bar in the field of security management."

Since its creation in 2001, Sourcefire's Vulnerability Research Team (VRT) has taken Snort rules to the next level, ensuring that rules are accurate and fully tested before they are released to the community. Snort has been downloaded more than 2 million times and has over 100,000 active users. The Snort rules language has also emerged as an industry standard with download rates tripling over the last year alone. Sourcefire's award-winning Vulnerability Research Team works closely with the open source community to develop the official Snort Rules that are distributed on Snort.org. This partnership results in much faster response to new threats while maintaining unparalleled quality and performance.
